NOTE: Jesus was talking of those who were slaves to sin and the devil.
Q13 How is the death of Jesus on the Cross related to victory over evil?
For as much then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood He also Himself likewise partook of the same; that through death He might destroy Him that had the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Hebrews 2:14,15.
Our Saviour Jesus Christ who hath abolished death and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:10
Death is swallowed up in victory. Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57
NOTE: Jesus created the world and the human race. He gave just one commandment in the Garden of Eden. It was broken, and death was the penalty. Jesus took that penalty so that those in bondage could go free. If we were to be able to go free, the only solution could come from the One who gave the law. The One who gave the law should take its penalty. No-one else could pardon us, or take away the guilt or give us another chance. An angel could not do it, a good man could not do it. It had to be the law-giver himself that could take these actions. ‘Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed on us that we should be called the sons of God’. 1 John 3:1.
Q14 By what words of hope and encouragement did Jesus offer a new way of life, and the end of sin and all its effects?
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33
