Truth for Today Bible Study Module 5
JESUS CHRIST THE CENTRE OF VICTORY OVER EVIL

Only begotten—The only One able to undertake the work of salvation. Compare Isaac, called in Hebrews 11:17 the ‘only begotten’ when Abraham had other children, and Isaac was clearly not the first. Isaac was the one through whom the promises of God came. Jesus is the one on earth through whom the Promise comes to us all, if we believe it.

Jesus—The Greek equivalent of the name Joshua meaning ‘Jehovah is salvation’, Saviour. The Father is Jehovah. Jesus, too, is Jehovah.

Christ—The anointed one. Originally a description of Jesus, but in common use in the New Testament as a name. He was anointed at His baptism to holy service. A Christian is one who follows Christ. This nick-name was first used in Antioch, during the time of the Apostles.

Emmanuel—God with us

Manifested—revealed

Messianic—to do with Messiah. ‘Messianic prophecies’ are those prophecies relating to the time when Jesus Christ lived on earth.

Consist—hold together

Q1  What declaration did Jesus make while He was on earth?

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.   John 16:33

Q2  The Bible says in John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.  Why was Jesus given to our world?

For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.  1 John 3:8

Q3  Does He have the power to do this?

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.  Matthew 28:18

NOTE:  As Jesus was going back to heaven He was about to take back to Himself all the creative divine power that He had before He came to earth. On earth He lived as our example and used only the power that His Father gave Him in the same way as when we pray for help.  On this earth ‘He made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Himself the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men’.  Philippians 2:7,8. On earth He lived as we do.

Q4  What relationship does Jesus have with our world?
