Q17 Warm sentimentality and religiosity are often given as cosy alternatives to the robust words of scripture. Which Bible account shows that feelings and the senses are not a safe guide in assessing our spiritual life?
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. 2 Peter 1:16-18
NOTE: On the Mount of Transfiguration Peter heard the actual voice of God and saw His glory intimately, but this did not become the most important thing in his spiritual experience. It was an experience of the senses which many long for, but for him there was something even more sure, and that all others could share too. A personal spiritual experience of the senses is a limited testimony and dies with you.
Q18 What did he declare was more important and enduring?
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 2 Peter 1:19
NOTE: Prophecy is for all people at all times. Thus far God’s Word has not failed and this gives confidence for the future. God is opening up to us day by day more and more of His Word, as other prophecies are still being fulfilled. The prophecies of the Bible point to the end of this world, and on into the new earth. It is not an ancient document that can be or will be superseded by personal knowing. It is a book for all time to all people. Its prophecies are continuing to give us the perspective we need in our lives, and to show us our Christian duty of witness for God.
Q19 How do we know from the Bible’s final prophetic warning that the gospel that has been from the beginning is for all people and all cultures right to the end?
And I saw another angel in heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth and to every nation and kindred and tongue and people, saying, Fear God and give glory to Him. Revelation 14:7
Q20 Sometimes the Bible is called the Word of truth, how long will its truth and importance last?
For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Psalm 100:5
