OVERCOMING THE WILES OF SATAN

To overcome—to conquer, To get the better of, to subdue, to be victorious over something. E.g. to get the better of the habit of smoking; to resist and subdue and conquer the temptation to smoke; to overcome the habit and stop smoking.

Wiles—tricks, ploys, deceits, using guile and stratagem to deceive.

Surfeiting—overeating, gluttony

Yoke—a piece of wood that links two working animals. They walk together, side by side in an even pace, sharing the task. This is how the Bible teaches that we can walk with Jesus. We do not linger behind, or run ahead, but walk with Him in all things. In this way we are safe.

To pray—to talk to God, to thank Him for things, to ask for His help, or His wisdom. This includes quietness when He can give us ideas or Bible verses that might help us. God is available for us at all times, when we kneel by our beds or when we are walking in the busy town centre

Sober—to be in a state of total alertness, and awareness of the situation around us so that we know how to respond appropriately.

To cleave—from a very old word also found in Swedish, meaning to stick to, to adhere to, to follow faithfully.

To serve—to become a servant of God to do what He asks.

Q1 In the conflict between good and evil, to whom does God give special blessings?

He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.  Revelation 3:5

Behold I make all things new... These words are true and faithful...  He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Revelation 21:5, 7

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.  Revelation 3:21

Q2 Whom did Jesus have to overcome?

But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan.  Matthew 16:23

NOTE: Satan was using Peter as His agent to speak the words of temptation, tempting Jesus that He did not need to be crucified.  Jesus recognised it was Satan behind the words, and gave the instruction for Satan to get behind Him and not hinder His way to the duty of the Cross that lay ahead of Him.

Q3 What commendation did the aged Apostle John give to the young Christian men of his day?

I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.  1 John 2:14
