And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. Genesis 2:16,17
NOTE: A commandment about a tree was fair and appropriate for them as plants were their only possessions. This commandment was important for it revealed two things about life in paradise. It showed that the first humans had freewill, the ability to chose to obey or not. They were not robots. It also showed that right from the beginning God had a system of law, and to break that law would incur the death penalty.
